The New 10 Essentials

The New 10 Essentials

The ‘Ten Essentials’ was originally a list compiled in the 1930s by mountaineering clubs in the Pacific Northwest. To go on a group outing it was required for each member of the party to have with them a collection of items that included; a pocket knife, compass, matches and a candle. For decades the list was considered canon in the outdoor world.

A modern version of the Ten Essentials echoes the original list’s focus on self-reliance in a more contemporary way. Next time you are in Telluride, come into Jagged Edge Mountain Gear and we’ll happily chat about each of the cardinal points below.

Jagged Edge Mountain Gear’s New 10 Essentials

Navigation. Getting lost is simply about not knowing when you're doing the wrong thing. Know the physical details of where you are going and carry a way to check those features against what you are experiencing.

Signal. This can be anything from a satellite phone to a good n' loud emergency whistle. If you get hurt, and want to be found, you have  to be able to tell people where you are.

Electronics. No doubt you'll have a phone and probably another gizmo or two that runs on a battery. Be sure you have plenty of power for the   appliances that might save your life.

Sun. Sunglasses and sun protection are a must, especially in the intense Colorado sunshine. Use mineral based sunscreens, consider wearing a sun hoody and be sure to bring a hat.

Dark. Even if you don't anticipate being out after dark, always bring a headlamp. Modern headlamps are so lightweight and powerful, there is no excuse not to have one in your kit.

First Aid. This is tricky because it really depends on your destination, exposure to danger and the difficulty of evacuation. Be prepared and remember.. no one ever regrets carrying a first aid kit that doesn’t get used. The best tool is basic first aid training; knowledge is by far the most useful thing you can carry in the mountains.

Water. Bring extra fluids or the ability to purify surface water. Dehydration is the quickest route to more serious problems.

Food. Everyone is different regarding food. However, you are a chemical engine and food is what makes you go. No food, no go.

Toiletry. If you bring toilet paper, please bring a bag to pack it out.

Weather. This is the big one. You must bring the appropriate outerwear, insulation and/or shelter necessary to survive bad weather. When the weather goes bad in Colorado, it goes really bad, really fast. The only constant is rapid change.

It is true that being prepared for a good time includes being invested in the unexpected. Plan ahead and carry what you might need.
